Timothy Frank Janak Sr.

Timothy Frank Janak Sr., lovingly known as “Tim” and “Gorilla Tim,” was born on February 14, 1953, in Houston, Texas, to Victor James Janak and Evelyn Doris Janak. He was the second of four children, growing up alongside his siblings, Victor James Janak II, Theodore Janak, and Mary Lynn Janak.

Tim grew up with a deep connection to nature and animals. His love of wildlife was evident

early on, as he cared for many unusual pets over the years, including a pet armadillo and raccoons. He attended St. Thomas High School in Houston before earning a degree in Mechanical Technology from the University of Houston.

Tim married Janeen Louise Provost, and together they welcomed their son, Timothy Frank Janak Jr. Throughout his life, Tim embraced every role he held—husband, father, grandfather, musician, athlete, healer, and friend—with an enormous heart and unmistakable enthusiasm.

A formidable canoe competitor, Tim was known on the water as “Gorilla Tim.” He competed in canoe races throughout Texas and across the United States, including the demanding Texas Water Safari, which he won three times. His determination, strength, and adventurous spirit made him a respected presence among fellow paddlers.

Tim was also an accomplished endurance runner who

completed many 50-mile races. Among his most memorable athletic achievements was finishing the Swiss Euro Marathon, a seven-day stage race covering 200 kilometers across Switzerland. His dedication to these demanding challenges reflected the same strength, perseverance, and love of adventure that he brought to every part of his life.

Music was another lifelong passion.

Beginning at age 15, Tim played the accordion and delighted thousands of people at German festivals, restaurants, and community celebrations. For many years, he was a member of the German band Alpenfest, performing at venues including Bavarian Gardens, Rudi Lechner’s, the German Deli Restaurant, and German festivals around the country. Those who

knew him will remember the joyful sight of Tim in lederhosen, wearing his pin-covered hat, smiling broadly as he filled the room with accordion music.

In 1992, Tim began a new chapter in massage therapy and established his practice, Paths in Healing. He became an influential figure among massage therapists in the Houston area. Through his distinctive approach and genuine care for others, he created a practice that clients deeply respected and from which many benefited. Tim had a remarkable gift for conversation: he listened attentively, cared sincerely, and always wanted to know what was on another person’s mind.

Tim loved travel and adventure, but the Grand Canyon held a special place in his heart. He completed multiple rim-to-rim hikes and took part in two rafting adventures through the canyon. He also shared his love of rhythm and community through drum circles, which he and his son hosted around the Houston area.

Tim is survived by his son, Timothy Frank Janak Jr.; his daughter-in-law, Jana; and his grandchildren, Timothy Frank Janak III, Kylie, and Sierra. He is also survived by Janeen Louise Provost, with whom he shared a son and many meaningful years.

Tim brought light, love, and joy wherever he went. He was the spark of every gathering—the person who could bring people together with an accordion tune, a sing-along, or a lively chicken dance. His warmth, music, laughter, adventurous spirit, and generous heart will remain in the memories of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
