When Pain Takes Over, Start With "What You Want"

After 20 years of hands-on work with clients in Houston, I've noticed something that has nothing to do with muscles. When someone has lived with neck or back pain long enough, their world starts to shrink. The dreams they used to talk about fade into the background, and the only goal left is "I just want this to stop hurting."

That's understandable. Pain is loud. It's also why I pay close attention to one of the Four Doctors: Dr. Happiness.

The Four Doctors, in Brief

The Four Doctors come from the CHEK Holistic Lifestyle Coaching framework I trained in. They are Dr. Happiness, Dr. Diet, Dr. Quiet, and Dr. Movement. When these four are in balance, your body has what it needs for health and vitality. Dr. Diet covers what you eat and drink, Dr. Quiet covers sleep and rest, and Dr. Movement covers how you move. Dr. Happiness is the dreamer, the one who gives the other three a reason to show up.

What Dr. Happiness Is Really About

Dr. Happiness is about what makes you feel joyful and alive. That includes your dreams, your goals, and the parts of you that are creative and playful. It's about creating love in your life.

It's also about what you feed your thoughts. What media do you take in each day, and does it help you feel the way you want to feel? Are the people you spend time with open to a relationship that uplifts you and supports the ideas you choose to have in your life?

Those questions may sound far from a sore neck. In my experience, they're closer than most people think.

Dream-Confirming vs. Pain-Focused

When you're in pain, it's easy to focus on everything that's wrong. You notice what's not going well, what you can't do, and even how life seems to be against you.

Dr. Happiness asks a different question: what do you want in your life, and how do you want to feel?

I call this being dream-confirming, which means putting your attention on what you want instead of what you don't want. "I don't want back pain" keeps the pain at the center. "I want to get down on the floor and play with my kids" or "I want to finish a round of golf and still feel good at dinner" gives you something to walk toward.

This isn't about pretending the pain isn't there. Pain is information worth listening to. Life isn't always fair, but you still get to choose how you see the events that show up in front of you. From there, it becomes a choice. Do I make what's happening in front of me hard, or do I approach it with ease and flow?

My Own Pain Teacher

I learned this the hard way. For years I took care of client after client, and my family, and ran myself into the ground. Then neck pain showed up. Before that, I had a hard time naming a dream at all.

Defining what I wanted, and the values that support it, changed how I managed that pain. It also helped me look at what was really underneath it. My neck pain became my teacher instead of just my pain.

A Daily Practice: Wake Up and Connect

Here's the practice I share with clients. Every morning when you wake up, before you pick up your phone or look at the to-do list:

  1. Connect to your vision for the life, and the world, you want to live in.

  2. Choose the way of being you want to create today.

  3. Connect with the inner essence of who you are and what you want to create in this world.

It takes a couple of minutes. Done daily, it becomes a rhythm, and rhythm is where Dr. Happiness does its best work.

Where Bodywork Fits

At our office on the Katy Freeway, near Memorial and Spring Branch, our hands-on work focuses on the muscle imbalances and patterns behind your pain. That work matters. Many clients find it goes further when they also know what they're healing for. Your "why" is what keeps you doing the small daily habits between sessions.

If you've been living with neck or back pain and you're ready to take ownership of your health, every new client starts with our Initial NST Assessment & Treatment. We'll look at what's going on in your body, treat it, and talk through your path forward.
