Writer's picture: Tim Janak JrTim Janak Jr

When addressing inflammation, there are natural ways to manage it. I always suggest working with the 6 foundational principles of health first and then adding in one or more of the suggested supplements. I have also included a few recipes that act as food and drink substitutes to help with inflammation.

It is important to cut out foods that can cause and promote inflammation in the body, such as seed oils, vegetable oils, processed foods, dairy products, sugar, and grains. These can all contribute to inflammation, and in order to get ahead of your inflammation, you must introduce healing foods that will help the body eliminate inflammation and cut out foods that promote inflammation!

Golden Milk Recipe

Golden milk, also known as turmeric milk, is a soothing and healthy beverage that combines warming spices and turmeric for anti-inflammatory benefits. Here's a recipe from Elizabeth Rider that is highly rated and easy to follow:

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 15 minutes

Servings: 1

Temperature: Warm

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup- organic coconut milk (or 1 cup unsweetened almond milk plus 1 teaspoon almond oil or coconut oil)

  • 1/4 teaspoon- golden milk paste (or 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric and a big pinch of freshly ground black pepper if using ground turmeric)

  • 1 small (1/4 inch)- piece of ginger root, peeled and grated (more or less to taste)

  • 1 big pinch- or sprinkle of ground cardamom

  • 1 big pinch- or sprinkle of ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon- raw honey (optional for sweetness)

Equipment Needed:

  • Small saucepan

  • Whisk or blender (optional for a frothier drink)

Instructions:

1. If using the paste, heat the milk in a small saucepan. Remove from heat and stir in the paste. Add a few grates of fresh ginger root for extra healing properties.

2. If not using the paste, blend or whisk all ingredients together, then warm through on the stove over medium heat for 15 minutes. Let it very gently simmer for 15 minutes but do not boil.

3. Taste and adjust sweetness with honey if desired.

Safety Notes:

  • Ensure the milk does not boil to avoid scorching.

  • Use caution when handling hot liquids.

Substitutions:

  • Ground turmeric can be used instead of the paste.

  • Maple syrup or sugar can replace honey for a vegan option.

Storage:

  • Best served immediately. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days but may separate.

Pro Tips:

* Use full-fat milk for a creamier texture.

* Grate fresh ginger for a more potent flavor.

* Adjust the amount of spices to your taste preference.

This recipe provides a comforting and healthful drink that can be enjoyed any time of the day.
