Improve Your Health, through “Quench”(ing) Your Thirst!,

Drinking water has never been so popular than before with many people carrying their own water bottle or purchasing cases of water. It is important to understand how the body stays hydrated. Recently, I came across the book Quench” by Dana Cohen, Gina Bria which discusses the importance of water and how to get stay and maintain your body’s hydration.

Hydrating your self is not complicated however being aware of what you are putting in your body is very important. Processed foods are big dehydrators along with anything that is dehydrated such as meat that is cured or powdered drinks (even if water is added to it) your body has has to use it’s water reserves to hydrate the dehydrated foods that you are putting into your body which take away from hydrating your body. Eating foods that are rich in water assist your body in staying hydrated. Below are some simple tips for hydration.

  1. Drink Water - Choose quality filtered water and drink half your bodyweight in ounces. Drinking from the tap has been known to have chemicals, pesticides and other unwanted materials in it. It is best to use a quality water filter or get your water from a natural spring. You can use www.findaspring.com and find a natural source of drinking water. There are various forms of water filters on the market along with different brands of spring water that is available in your grocery store.

  2. Salt your Water - Most filtered water does not have the essential minerals our bodies need. In fact drinking too much purified water that lacks minerals can cause you to be over hydrated and cause symptoms that can be just as dangerous as dehydration. So adding a pinch of sea salt can actually improve your body’s ability to hydrate and improve the taste of your water.

  3. Lemon - Adding lemon to your water can also help with your ability to absorb the water that you are drinking. It also adds a nice taste to it too.

  4. Break your Fast - Having 16 oz of water first thing in the morning will wake up and improve your digestion. Do this before consume aany other foods or drinks.

  5. Pre-meal hydration - Drinking water 15 minutes prior to any meal will help to prepare the digestive system for the meal the you are about to consume.

  6. Hydrating Foods - Eat food that are high in gel water. Such as leafy greens, cucumber, celery, but don’t crazy on the fruit and if you are going to do fruit, apples and pears are a high fiber source which helps your body to stay hydrated.
