Paths in Healing Addresses Pain and Pain Sources. TMJ Pain.

TMJ Pain addressed by Massage

What is TMJ Dysfunction?

TMJ dysfunction can be any of the following: Pain accompanying the opening and closing of the jaw, Grinding of the teeth during sleep, popping in the jaw upon opening and closing of the jaw, “freezing or locking up” of the jaw (lock jaw) upon opening or closing of the jaw. If the condition is not cleared up it could lead to increased pain in the jaw and limited movement.

TMJ Dysfunction is often caused by the muscles that cause the jaw to open and close. These muscles are called the muscles of mastication. The TMJ is the joint made up of the Temporal and Mandible bones. Muscles and ligaments hold this joint together. Trauma or postural distortion will cause misalignment of this joint. Being that the temporal bone is related to the movement of the Illiums of the hip then if the hips are shifted for some reason, over time the temporal bones will move causing a misalignment of the TMJ.

How does Paths in Healing address TMJ pain?

We approach TMJ dysfunction by starting with charting the entire body and cranium. The external muscles of the cranium are worked and released to encourage proper movement of the cranium bones. Detailed work is done on the internal muscles of mastication, the tongue and swallowing muscles. Specific motion exercises are given to clients to do at home to retrain muscles. The overall posture of the client is studied and the balance of C1, C2, and the base of the occiput is balanced. Also the cranium is balanced to the hips and their position in space.
