What is shoulder pain?
The shoulder joint consist of a very shallow ball and socket joint. The position of the shoulder tends to angle the socket of the joint slightly downward and along with the “Shallowness” of the cup tends to make it an unstable joint. Also the shoulder joint is the only joint in the body that is not really held together by ligaments. The ligaments of the shoulder serve the purpose of only to keep the bones from moving too far in any one direction. They have little to do with holding the joint in place. The shoulder bones are held together by the four rotator cuff muscles. These muscles are responsible for the shoulders fine movements. If any of these muscles become weak or shortened then the shoulder joint is at risk of being injured.
Some dysfunctions of the shoulder are: frozen shoulder, dislocated shoulder, shoulder sprains, shoulder impingement, shoulder bursitis, rotator cuff tears or shoulder tendinitis.
How does Paths in Healing address shoulder pain?
Massage must be cautiously applied in a manner so that it does not destabilize or add to the destabilization of the joint. This will require a thorough assessment and charting of the body. The position of the scapula to the torso must be evaluated as well the strength of the muscles that hold the shoulder girdle in place on the torso. Also the muscles of the rotator cuff must be evaluated and determined if they are in balance in flexibility and strength. Proper massage techniques to release trigger points and fascia constrictions where needed.
